CHAMPS student, Kiera Peltz, contributed to the latest (May-June) issue of LA Youth, the newspaper by and about teens. LA Youth is the only newspaper in the area that brings a teen's view of the world to more than 1,300 classrooms six times a year. It is an independent, not-for-profit journlism education program that publishes 70,000 copies and distributes to newspapers free to teachers throughout Los Angeles County.

CHAMPS Student to Attend California State Summer School For The Arts

Jacqueline Gunning was accepted into the California State Summer School for the Arts (InnerSpark) program held at CalArts. She will be in the Visual Arts Program, with an emphasis on photography, painting, and drawing. The school was created by the California Legislature, and held its first session in 1987. Its purpose is to provide a training ground for future artists who wish to pursue careers in the arts and entertainment industries in California. The California State Summer School for the Arts is a state agency funded through a unique public-private partnership. Now embarking on its twenty-fourth summer of operation the school has trained more than eleven thousand highly talented students.

Jacqueline will participate in four weeks of exploration, discovery and hard work designed to unleash her creative power. From July 10 through August 6, 2010, she will receive intensive training from professionals in music, theatre, video and film, visual arts, dance, creative writing, and animation. This rigorous, pre-professional, month-long training program, attracts talented high school students from all over the country. InnerSpark provides a supportive environment in which students hone acquired skills and explore new techniques and ideas for an intense and exciting learning experience.

Thanks to the generosity of John Tesh this scholarship has been established in honor of his wife Connie Selleca, for her tireless efforts on behalf of not only CHAMPS but for her service to so many people in need. It is also in honor of Vincent Sellecchia, in honor of his work throughout the country teaching kids and adults the value of caring enough to take action and help those in need. This $25,000 scholarship will be given annually to a deserving CHAMPS senior who has been accepted to a 4 year college or university.

Jessica will be attending Mills College in the Fall. While at CHAMPS she has volunteered for the Ovarian Cancer Coalition, The Jewish Home for The Aging, The Red Cross, Drop Food Not Bombs, and Relay For Life. She will be the first person in two generations of her immediate family to attend college. "I have big dreams..., I know I can contribute many great things and ideas to the world, and going to Mills College will help me accomplish my goals."

4 CHAMPS students receive scholarships to attend Berklee School of Music Summer Program

Jacquelin Givelber, Noah Lucas, Tamina Johnson-Lawson, & Natalie Kalamdaryan have received scholarships to attend Berklee's Five-Week Summer Performance Program. The program, now in its 22nd year, is the largest, most comprehensive summer music program available--anywhere. Better known as "Five-Week," the Berklee Five-Week Summer Performance Program, with its diversity of study options, world-class Berklee faculty, visiting artists, and state-of-the-art facilities, is the premiere contemporary music summer program for young musicians. CHAMPS students to attend Alvin Ailey American Dance Center Summer Intensive

Prima Tesh and Kristin Baylis have been selected to attend the Alvin Ailey Summer Intensive in New York City. The Summer Intensive Program is a 6-week training program for pre-professional students, ages 16-25, with a minimum of three years of consistent training in ballet and modern. Students are selected from auditions that are conducted all over the world. In 1982, The Ailey School and its programs received accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Dance.

The program is structured to advance the technical skills of our students in a wide variety of techniques. Students take 12-15 technique and workshop classes weekly from our core curriculum which includes a daily ballet class and a daily class of Horton and/or Graham-based modern. All students are evaluated in placement classes at the beginning of the program to determine the proper level in each technique.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre has gone on to perform for an estimated 23 million people in 48 states and in 71 countries on six continents, including two historic residencies in South Africa. The company has earned a reputation as one of the most acclaimed international ambassadors of American culture, promoting the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance.

CHAMPS students win the VEX ROBOTICS Design Challenge Essay Contest

Essays written by Payal Chakraborty and Yael Rosenblum were selected to be among the top ten entries in the Vex Robotics Design Challenge essay contest. Their essays were described as "clear and concise essays describing what VEX means to them and how it has affected their lives." These students won a $50.00 gift certificate.

CHAMPS student, Hailey Chavez will be among more than a thousand high school and college students from the United States and around the world that will take up residence on the UCLA campus this summer as part of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television's Arts Camp/Workshops.

The Powerhouse Theater Apprentice Training Program provides an opportunity for students to look at the art of theater in new and meaningful ways. Participants explore the boundaries of theater from the traditional to the new, from campus to town, from amphitheater to art center. By living, breathing, and creating theater with peers and professionals alike students come away with a unique life changing experience.

The program is the result of a unique collaboration between Vassar College, a prestigious liberal arts institution, and New York Stage and Film, an established professional theater company. A Powerhouse day will include morning classes taught by an outstanding faculty, in acting, voice, movement, directing, and Soundpainting. Powerhouse afternoons feature rehearsals, workshops, and more, while evenings are filled with performances.

In 1913, Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield fulfilled their dreams of creating a theater and dance camp in the mountains. Now, 97 years later, Perry-Mansfield is recognized as the oldest continuously-operating performing arts school and camp in the nation. Throughout the years, a number of distinguished alumni, faculty, and guest artists have passed through the doors of Perry-Mansfield. Founded in 1935, the Tony Award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) is among the oldest and largest professional non-profit theatres in the nation. Each year OSF presents an eight-and-a-half-month season of eleven plays in three theatres plus numerous ancillary activities, and undertakes an extensive theatre education program. Operating on a budget exceeding $26 million, OSF presents more than 780 performances annually with attendance of approximately 400,000. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival is committed to including diverse people, ideas, cultures and traditions in all areas of our work within a high-caliber theatre environment.

COLLEGE BOUND CHAMPIONS!

We are so proud of our Champs students who have already been accepted to colleges! Special thanks goes to Anne Cochran, our college counselor, that has tirelessly worked with our students to complete applications. This year, 2,300 seniors in the greater Los Angeles area competed for the L.A.-based Posse Scholarships, and 80 students were chosen (10 at each of 8 colleges -- Tulane, UCLA, UC-Berkeley, U of Wisconsin, Dickinson, Kalamazoo, Grinnell and Bucknell) -- so CHAMPS won 2 out of 80 scholarships, which is a pretty stupendous accomplishment when one considers the intensecompetition from all of the large public schools in the greater L.A. market. Out of 17 CHAMPS candidates, about half of them made it to the second competition round. Three (Yvonne, Sharon and Chris)progressed to the third round -- and then Yvonne and Sharon were finally chosen as winners.
